Women in Ag Leading the Way

Becky Church | April 12, 2018

A Passion For Progress.

Because no matter who you are, where you're from or where you're going, one thing remains the same - we all want to succeed.

Yesterday, Karin and I were given the opportunity to speak at the 2018 Women's Agricultural Leadership Conference. And yes, you guessed it, this year's conference theme was "A Passion for Progress." In a society that focuses on highlighting millennials as being lazy and unmotivated, I can assure you that the agricultural industry proves that status quo otherwise.

Hundreds of women from around the state, high-school aged to retirees, gathered to learn from women who are serving as leaders in agriculture. Karin served on the general session's panel of women in executive leadership roles. She shared her biggest tips and lessons that she has learned over the years in various positions she's held, plus how she found her place as executive director at the Minnesota Beef Council.

Karin biggest tip?

"Be confident in your decisions and own them. You'll feel so much better after making a decision - no matter how big or small. Just stick to your gut, be intentional and move on confidently."

She also said, "find mentors that realize your further potential and motivate you to keep going."

Other women on the executive panel concluded that no matter who you are, where you come from or what your goals may be, it is important to exemplify confidence and speak up. All of them spoke of the importance of having a mentor who they have looked up to and confided in over the years. Whether it be about faith, fashion or frustrations (classic example of some 'wine and whine,' but it's not always that way. we promise), having a mentor helped them to continue to progress with passion in their careers and lives outside of work.

Speaking of mentors, our very own Karin was honored during the luncheon presentation after being nominated as an outstanding mentor!

For 16 years, the Outstanding Agricultural Mentor Award has been recognizing leaders in agriculture who have been positive mentors and role models for people in agricultural fields, especially women.

Some words said about Karin included, "she is a sincere, down-to-earth mentor who is not only an excellent manager, but someone who also cares deeply."

We may be biased, but we couldn't agree more! Congratulations on this honor, Karin!

Over lunch, we also heard some valuable remarks from Minnesota Commissioner of Agriculture - Mr. Dave Frederickson. He mentioned the progress he's seen with women in leadership roles since he first began in his position until now, just a few months away from retirement.

I also had the opportunity to represent the Minnesota Beef Council, and led a session titled, "Branded by Relatability: Incorporating Personality to Increase Engagement." It was fun sharing with other passionate leaders and communicators some of my top tips in communicating effectively and authentically.

My tips?

"You must be willing to have courage, dig deeper and laugh at your own jokes."

(...as evident in our last blog "5 Easy Tips for Easter Entertaining"...)

The afternoon went on to include more inspiring and informational sessions regarding leadership, sales, finances and accountability. A day of networking with wonderful women in agriculture in a day well spent!

With a community, we have accountability.

By lifting others up, we rise together.

Have a great rest of the week and fist pumps to you -
