The Kuschel Family

MEET YOUR FARMER:

Miles and Sarah Kuschel Family:

TELL US ABOUT Rocking k ranch.

Rocking K Ranch was established in 1946 by Morris and Stella Kuschel in Cass County.  They raised four kids on the ranch, and their youngest son, Tom, stayed at the home ranch and continued with his wife, Linda, and three children. Tom's son, Miles, and his wife, Sarah, along with their three children are continuing on the ranching tradition. We raise crossbred beef cattle on a rotational grazing set up.  Horses still play a large part on the ranch in helping care for the cattle.  We always strive to move forward and learn how the new technologies fit into our ranch, while still holding onto the traditions of yesterday.

What is your favorite part of raising your children on the ranch?

Our favorite part of raising the kids on the ranch is all the time we get to spend together. We get to watch them learn everyday, while developing a strong work ethic which will help them be successful in their adult life. We are thankful that they have had the opportunity to learn from the previous generations as well.

HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY AND ANIMAL CARE ON YOUR FARM?

We use UAV’s or drones to check on the herd or monitor grass conditions in the pasture.  We have also installed cameras in our calving areas so that we can check in on the cows and new calves without disturbing their natural instincts. That saves us a great deal of time and helps keep the animals in a low stress environment.

How does it feel to be carrying on your Family’s legacy?

Carrying on a family legacy is a blessing, and our hope is that we can pass that on to the next generation as well. The love of the land and livestock makes us proud to raise our kids and cattle here, and we fully believe it is a lifestyle worth carrying on.

How do you prepare your favorite cut of beef?

We enjoy a good steak on the grill, ground beef in a hotdish or kettle of chili.  Our son loves beef tacos, and you may have seen our daughter making cheeseburger cups in the Minnesota Beef kitchen earlier this year.

Where can we follow along with the activities on your farm?

BACKGROUNDING

Between 6-12 months of age, cattle spend time at stocker and backgrounder farms and ranches where they graze on a variety of pastures. Here they gain weight and convert forage and grass into lean protein.
