What was our Last Supper of 2018?

Karin Schaefer | January 3, 2019

What do New Kids on the Block, Marky Mark and Burgers all have in Common? Wahlburgers!

After a long holiday break of being cooped up at home and other family gatherings, we decided to venture out on New Year’s Eve to the Mall of America (MOA for short). The rides were wild and our stomaches were growling … or churning! MOA has no shortage of amazing food options. Especially when it comes to Burgers: Shake Shack, Burger Burger, and several other fast casual options.

I had wanted to try Wahlburgers for a while and just like that, from a top the Ferris Wheel, I spot the Wahlburgers sign. It was calling my name! So, my mom accompanied me and two of my kiddos for a feast. Wahlburgers is a casual dining burger restaurant and bar chain with 26 restaurants owned by Chef Paul Wahlberg, in partnership with two of his brothers - actors Donnie and Mark Wahlberg.

They had great menu options and I was impressed with the kids meal selection. I am embarrassed to admit that sometimes we avoid arguments by allowing our kids (7 & 5) to share. One gets a burger and the other chicken tenders. Naturally I proposed this scenario, but both kids shouted that they wanted burgers. This was a proud mom moment for sure! The kid's meals came with a 3 oz. burger, French fries, a drink AND we ordered a scoop of ice cream to be served at the end of the meal. Both kids finished their burgers in no time, and Sam gave it a 12 out of 5 stars!

The "Mom’s Sloppy Joe" was calling my name. I was so excited to get the chance to swipe a bite or two of this beauty!

“Mom’s homemade sloppy joe smothered on thick-cut grilled bread finished with crispy onions, Paul’s housemade signature Wahl sauce & cheese sauce.”

This beast did not disappoint! But then again, I am a sucker for a sloppy joe! I had to try one of their signature burgers. The menu claims the burger was a fresh angus beef proprietary blend of brisket, short rib and chuck.

Chef Paul’s choice was “The Our Burger:" 1/3 lb. burger, lettuce, tomato, onion, government cheese, Paul’s homemade signature wahl sauce & pickles.”

It was a classic. A good burger can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. My favorite are the ones that are sloppy, dripping sauce and juice down your hands as you eat it. This was not one of those burgers, but honestly it was a solid 4.5/5 stars. The burger was tender and flavorful, with great sauce and toppings. My mom and I shared an order of tator tots, and nibbled on a few of the kids' French fries. This was maybe where the restaurant fell short. The fries were just okay and the tots were plain and cold.

Final take: I would most definitely go here again! Next time, I would probably order the Sloppy Joe. To me, that scored a 5/5 stars. The kids will get the burgers again, it was a huge hit! I may try a different side and see if the onion rings or sweet potato fries have more to offer.  It was a good last supper of 2018!

More about Wahlburgers: Starting last year, Wahlburger's ground beef patties are also sold in grocery stores. Currently in Minnesota, they are sold at Hy-Vee locations. Newly announced in 2017, Hy-Vee will start to partner on opening Wahlburgers restaurant locations, 26 planned for the Midwest. Hy-Vee also is adding Wahlburgers-branded menu items to its more than 80 Market Grille in-store restaurants.

May your 2019 be filled with beef and burgers -
