Hazellewood Grill and Tap Room

Alyssa Groskopf | May 27, 2019

Why yes, we did welcome our new intern to the office by taking her out to try a restaurant with us. *Cue the celebration with beef-themed dishes. On Monday, May 13, the Minnesota Beef Council staff travelled to Tonka Bay, Minnesota to Hazellewood Grill and Tap Room, a restaurant that focuses on serving fresh, sophisticated, and seasonal dishes. Hazellewood Grill and Tap Room was a recipient of a Diners’ Choice Award in 2019.

Upon driving up to the restaurant, everyone was impressed by the beautiful patio. Being Minnesota strong, we decided to take advantage of the sunny afternoon and chose a table outdoors. However, immediately after sitting down, the clouds rolled in..so we decided to move inside after all. Yet, this choice did not disappoint, as the inside of the restaurant was beautifully decorated.

This particular stop was a new location for everyone, so we all took as much time as we could to evaluate all of the choices. The menu was full of options that met the needs of all beef lovers, from burgers to steak salads. Everyone ordered something different, so the team took the chance to give you a little insight on their choices!

Karin

Order: ‘The’ Steak Sandwich: filet medallions, portabella mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, basil mayo, swiss, truffle oil, ciabatta.

Rating on a scale of 1-10: Karin gave this item a 9. Karin thought that the flavors of this dish worked wonderfully together. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium and was very tender. The ciabatta bread held up surprisingly well with all of the fixings on the sandwich. However, it was a hearty helping for a lunch selection and she would have liked to see a smaller portion – but it was delicious!

Becky

Order: Steak Salad: grilled top sirloin, mixed greens, deviled eggs, old smokehouse bacon, grape tomatoes, amablu crumbles, avocado, white balsamic vinaigrette.

Rating on a scale of 1-10: Becky gave this item a 9. Becky thought the steak was cooked a little more than she was hoping, but otherwise, the salad was wholesome and delicious with a spring mix of greens, bacon bits, deviled eggs, tomatoes and white balsamic dressing. The fact that the eggs were deviled rather than just hard boiled really added a unique flavor to the salad!

Katie

Order: Steak Healthy Bowl: steak, quinoa, steamed fresh chef’s vegetable, lemongrass sauce, baby spinach and arugula, edamame, cucumber, grape tomatoes, sunflower seeds, white balsamic vinaigrette and plum sesame sauce.

Rating on a scale of 1-10: Katie gave this item an 8. Katie thought it was a light, fresh and unique dish. In incorporated lots of fresh vegetables that had almost an Asian flair to them. The steak was a perfect addition to the vegetables and quinoa, grilled to perfection! This dish was perfect for a beautiful spring day!

Alyssa

Order: Cowboy Burger: old smokehouse bacon, Tillamook cheddar, barbecue sauce

Rating on a scale of 1-10: Alyssa gave this item a 9. The burger was cooked to a perfect medium, and the smoked bacon and Tillamook cheese were a perfect complement to enhance the flavors. The barbecue sauce was perhaps a little much and got to be a bit messy, so this is maybe an item she would not recommend for a first date. Aside from that, it was a great spin on a classic summer meal!

Overall, the team thoroughly enjoyed our experience at this restaurant and would highly recommend any of the selections we had!
